Basically the title. I’m in the casting process for a very very small short film I’m directing. I’ve never done open casting before; I went to a film school with a fairly large acting program so I usually would either cast people I knew personally or it would be like a “So-and-so’s roommate would be good for this” kind of situation. It’s early days so I’m waiting on self-tape submissions from a few people who have applied (using Backstage) and one finally did a little while ago. I felt weird about just like airing the submission so I sent back a message essentially saying “Hey I saw and liked this, thank you for taking the time out, I’m waiting on some other people but I’ll definitely let you know.” I wrote it out friendlier than that but I’m summarizing. Is that unusual? How would those of you that are actors feel about that? I would like to stress how new I am at this. I have very little idea what I’m doing, I just know if I was on the acting end of it the constantly being ignored would bum me out.

It is advised that you do at least some basic research on what actor headshots look like -- composition, framing, lighting. You will find a Google Image search for "actor headshots" to be very helpful for this. Non-professional shots are fine for age/typecasting, but please keep in mind that one picture is a difficult way to go about this. Video of you moving and speaking would be ideal, but understandably more difficult to post. For what it's worth, the branding workshop at SAG-AFTRA recommends a five-year age range. That's inclusive, so for example 19-23, 25-29, 34-38, etc.

Obviously, I’ve hear a lot of distinct voice actors. But I can also hear regular ones. I guess it’s just anime specific like Chris Sabo, Matthew Mercer, or Brittany Karbowski. Just name a few, but their voices are very iconic and like used to the ear so I was just wondering, do you need to know a bunch of accents to make you a good VA or is it just your voice in general?

Tl;Dr My manager adamant that my headshots need to have a blurred real-world-esaue background so that casting can place me in the world. I want something more monochrome and my efforts to find a compromise are turning into him... passive-aggressively asking if I want to drop him? Is the background really that important? \--- My manager asked me to update my headshots a little while back, and has been very adamant that they have a "real-world" backdrop (basically a broken that could give the impression of a location rather than a monochrome backdrop). My previous session a year and a half back was with a photographer he recommended who did this style (and some monochrome bg according to website, but manager has asked this photog to stick with real world for his clients). Budget has, however, been a big issue for me lately, and while my manager did try to give me an inexpensive recommendation, I just wasn't a fan of this person's work. As I talked to some friends (also repped by this manager), they mentioned a photographer with a great deal on some headshots that looked great on his site... But they had a more monochrome background. Asked a mentor their thoughts on current trends and she said that she's seen more of a push for minimal, neutral tone, almost editorial shots rather than real world (and questioned whether I NEEDED new shots right now). And I was starting to trust my rep's guidance less than the rest of my circle which just didn't feel good. At a certain point I realized I needed to just go with something and decided to ask the monochrome photographer about a session. I notified my manager and even told him that if there's something specific missing from this session that would absolutely require a more real-world backdrop I'd be open to exploring another mini-session with someone of his choosing. He came back and said "**We are hoping that Casting can see their character in YOU... if they do not know you... they have your headshots... AND - if they are trying to see a fully realized and fleshed out character in YOU... and you are standing in front of some generic backdrop... well - we don't expect much.** **So - please rethink this and move towards a backdrop that has LIFE behind you...** **I only wish that other Actors would communicate their thoughts like you have... in order to engender this very conversation.** **Please reconsider..."** I left it alone for about a week to give it some thought and decided I could compromise and go with the previous photographer, get updates with his real world bg to the shots my manager's mentioned, and then use any remaining time to get a couple shots of what I was considering with the monochrome. Best of both worlds! Emailed that photographer to ask about times and emailed my manager with that plan. Manager said "ok" and that he'd like to update all of my current shots except one (so he can discontinue the rest? and to send him my wardrobe choices. Okay, more updates than I thought but fine overall. Then 40 minutes later my manager sends: **"\[Photographer\] just reached out to me...** **He is streamlining his business and will be singularly using those very plain jane monochromatic backdrops...** **These do not align with the very successful school of thought that demands a bit of real world imagery.** **I do not wish to get in the way of any headshot direction YOU may wish to follow. I do know though that you as the Actor deserve to be with a rep you can align with. If I am no longer serving your purpose - well I have to accept that.** **I will look for your thoughts as you seek to move forward as an Artist and Performer."** And now I'm just at a loss. I understand that reps will have their thoughts and recommendation for headshots of a certain *quality*, but is the *kind of background* really that big a deal? Has this ever been this big an issue for anyone here?

Hey, begginer actor here. I've been in a few smaller projects and recently auditioned for a huge one. I was watching some videos for tips before I was about to film my self tape and almost all, if not every video, mentioned how you see emotions in the characters eyes and how eyes are the biggest part of your audition. Nobody ever really explains well what this even means. The best I was able to understand this sentence is like this: By where you look, and how wide or closed your eyes are. I would like for someone to tell me if I understood it right or not. I've been trying to watch some Oscar winning actors to see how they act with their eyes, and what I listed above is the only thing that I'm really noticing besides the movements and facial expressions. I would really appreciate it if someone could explain this sentence better and what it truly means. Thank you!

I recently got accepted into this program as a fairly new actor with little experience (I’ve done some short film and community theatre work, and I’ve never studied acting formally) - it’s quite expensive, and it doesn’t provide a degree, but it does provide a certificate. Do casting directors care about schooling and experience like this? I know the lessons and skills I learn from a conservatory like this will be priceless, but I suppose I’m wondering if I should either post-pone my enrollment to develop my voice as an actor more first, seeing as how I’m pretty green, or if I should look for a conservatory that offers an official degree instead. My main goal is to learn and grow as an artist, which I know Meisner will certainly help with. But I guess I am considering if my time and money will be better spent with a program that offers something that makes me look more “credible,” since the long term goal is of course to work in this industry.

About to be a senior in college, and realizing I want to be a film actor by AdventurousAd9522 • last post Aug 11th
Hi all, I'm about to start my senior year studying physics at a small liberal arts college. I have always done acting, studied it in high school, and have done several student films and plays in college, but somehow ended up getting sucked into physics. I do enjoy STEM, but recently I've kinda gotten hit with a feeling that this isn't what I want to do for the rest of my life. I love acting, and the feeling of becoming another character (especially on screen) is thrilling to me like nothing else. I'm feeling a bit lost at the moment, as it is too late for me to change majors, and I'm on a full ride scholarship so I can't afford to do another year of school. I know that conservatories and other shorter programs exist, although I don't know how I would afford something like that. I'm left with a few questions: \- Should I pay to pursue more formal training as an actor? \- Can I just go straight into it? How would I go about doing that? Any recommendations are welcome. For reference, my current path is a bit strange. I'm applying to PhD programs for the field of physics that I have done research in, but I'm only doing this because essentially it can't hurt, and I might turn them down in favor of taking a few years to explore acting. I guess my thinking is that I can always return to physics as a fallback, but I'm pretty willing to commit to acting even if it is a lot of work and rejection.

**Reposting as I did some fixes on my resume as a lot of you were giving advice on that vs agencies! LOL** Hello all! Looking to get some advice on where to direct my attention to in terms of submitting to agents. I am in the market for a new agency and want to know if anyone has any recommendations based on my current experience. I attached my current resume of my work so far, including a SAG film as a lead and a handful of other Lead roles in film. Does anyone have any agencies they recommend? I am based in the Southeast US and can be a local hire to ATL if necessary. I have attached an image of my resume (blacked out my contact info). Any advice/suggestions are welcome! We are all actors here so would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
