I have a simple question. Why most of the time families in movies and tv shows are made up of actors that are strangers instead of using a whole family thats a real family irl?? Sorry if its a dumb question i have no knowledge at all about acting or that field.

So I know that’s a tall order. I’m a full time voice actor and am also represented for on camera commercial. It is my goal to book more dramatic roles. I’d like to further my education in that regard. I am very lucky to have 2 years left on my G.I. Bill, but need to use it in the next 15 months. I don’t want to take a break from my current work, and would need at least most of the weekdays free. Nights or one or two days a week would be best. I used my first two years on an audio engineering certificate from SAE. It was 3 hours twice a week for two years. Does a technical school like that exist for actors? I’ve graduated from the Upright Citizens Brigade here in New York, but have otherwise never studied acting. While I’m booking commercial work regularly, I feel that there are some fundamentals I’m missing when I get the chance to audition for features and shorts.

I got professional headshots down a couple of months ago and been applied to all of the agencies in my area twice already. Even the lower rated ones. I’m trying to figure out why I’m not hearing a response from ANY of them. My resume isn’t super thick but I’ve checked out other actors’ resumes that are with the agencies and have seen that some of them have about the same or even LESS as me on theirs. I also know for a fact my headshots are marketable and specific towards my “type”. I just want to know if there’s something I may be doing wrong and if anyone can provide tips on getting their attention. I look forward to your responses!

Question about paying voice actors! I’m in the very very early stages of developing an indie game all by myself — I’m not putting any money into this because I’m broke and I’ll be doing all the writing, art, and coding by myself. The only thing is, I most definitely can’t do voice acting for 17 different characters by myself. I was thinking about posting a casting call on castingcallclub.com (I believe that’s what the website is called) and looking for volunteers who would be willing to record a few short snippets for my project — I don’t need full sentences, more like tag lines. Things like “I see.”, “interesting,” and maybe a few extra sounds like laughing and crying. Five tags in total. The thing is, I want to eventually release and sell my game for $5-$10 on steam. It feels kind of dirty to ask for volunteers for a project that I will (hopefully) be making money off of once it comes out. I’ve googled it a few times and I see the average is to pay voice actors at least $100 for their services — the thing is I can’t afford that at the moment and I’m not sure if I ever will be able to. The other thing is, that’s the average for voice actors who record full sentences and lines and I will only be needing tag lines. So, what do you think would be a fair price to pay for five tag lines? Should I start at, lets say $10 total? That’s a price I’ve seen thrown around on casting call quite often... Now, don’t get me wrong — if this game actually ends up being a success, I’ll definitely get back to the voice actors and pay them more for their service. But, assuming this game goes no where, is $10 a fair price? I know it’s a huge downgrade from $100, but I ask because I’m a broke college student and like I said, I’ve seen that price before on casting call. My assumption is casting call is home to many beginner level voice actors who do it more as a hobby than a career, so would this be an acceptable amount? Really don’t want to sound like the scum of the earth who doesn’t want to pay artists what they deserve, so please let me know if I’m horribly wrong here! The only experience I have with voice acting is volunteering my own voice for various YouTube series, and none of them have been payed gigs. I’m a real newbie here. Thanks to those who answer!

Hey all, I know this isn't a typical post on this sub but I'm looking for specific advice. My boyfriend and I are graduating college, him in a few weeks, me in a few months. I have a full-time job lined up and plan on supporting us as he gets his career underway. This is something we've talked about extensively. We're also planning to move cross country to the city where my job is located (in Seattle), meaning he loses the connections he's formed over the last few years in school. From everything I've learned on this sub and by watching him in real life, it seems like the life of an actor can be incredibly discouraging. Between that, the fact that I will be the primary earner, and the loss of connections, I'm a little concerned about his morale over the next few months. How can I best support him at the start of his career? Are there things you wished your partner knew? Thanks in advance for the advice! This seems like an amazing community I'm lucky to be tangentially a part of.

So I'm 25 years old. Just started in drama school. Last year I was in foundation in drama school and am now getting my BA acting. I've been working hard to get into drama school and sacrificed so much. I just got out of meeting where I've been told I have failed acting unit. Me shocked, started crying in front of the teacher. If I fail first acting unit how the fuck will I be good actor and be successful to my standards. This semester has been extremely hard. I recently got diagnosed with auto immune disease which affected me terrible. I missed three weeks of school because of it. Working towards getting into good school and then finally getting in and then have to deal with this disease has just taken toll on me. Being told that I've failed was like a punch knock out. I'm 25... That's a huge concern. I will however continue the course and they are aware of my disease. I'll get the chance to show a scene again and failed if succeeded I'll be just like any other student in the course. Not behind. I'm just ashamed, I'm Devastated. I can handle getting no and critisim but to fail the first acting class when I did my best despite my disease and missing out. I just feel absoulete shit. Like I am shit. What am I doing here thoughts. And just angry about my situation. Have any of you had this kind of failure and succeeded. I'm determined of doing whatever I can. Work as hard as I can. Giving 200% to get my craft better. I just needed to say something to someone. Cause I haven't told anyone. I'm so ashamed. Haven't even told my family. Here I am just crying in my studio room. Feeling like shit. Wanna throw up. This is a whiny self pity post. And I hate the fact I'm just writing it. I just needed to write this. Get this out and maybe even get support and advice. If you are reading this. Thank you. And if you have anything to say it would mean a lot to me. My thoughts are at least not helping me now.

So I'm a beginning actor, been attending weekly classes for 2 months now. In between classes I am doing voice work exercises, reading stamisvalski uta hagen, chekhov pretty much anything that helps me. I read plays out loud to myself every week, do monologues and script analysis. Despite being new to this and not having found any work yet it's starting to affect my sleep and stress where my I have a strong desire and drive to do more. It's gotten to the point where I'm thinking of just producing some of my own work if j cant find any which requires so much skill just write and produce something. Any advice? Should I just take a step back and relax?

Hello all! I've been in LA nearly 3 months now, started acting recently, and would like to see how much of my monthly income I can make from it. As such, I'm going to invest to get on more of the casting sites and see how much more work that brings in. I am currently on LACasting (has been great) and Actor's Access (disappointed so far but it's only been a week). My plan is to also register with Central Casting (if I can ever get that damn in-person appointment), Casting Frontier (have had a lot of actors say good things about this one), and Extras! Management (looks a little pricey but someone said this is an amazing resource for background work). Does anyone have experience with some of these other sites I'm considering, and does this sound like a good plan of attack? Would love to get some LA perspective, thanks all!

Howdy, So this is a problem I've been thinking about a lot lately--how do you tell your employer that you need to leave for an audition--Without getting fired? Are you completely transparent about it and let them know you're an actor or do you just tell them you have a doctors appointment? Obviously, this is a temporary job but it is still a source of income... but I'm afraid that I'll start prioritizing the wrong thing if I choose working over an audition. What do y'all do to get around this? I'm pretty anxious when it comes to acting outside of school because I'm still getting my BFA, but "real world" actors...what do you do? What kind of jobs to you have? I've been scouring the temp agencies, thought about substitute teaching, and restaurants that serve brunch..but what other temp jobs should do you recommend? I would appreciate any advice, really. I think this is a question that doesn't get answered as much, maybe because it has a simple answer, but what is that answer.
First Short Film, Director Seems Really Unprofessional by fakeprincess • last post Dec 11th
So I decided a couple months ago that I wanted to start acting again (haven't since high school) mostly as a hobby, I've done some extra work and got cast in a short film for a brand new production studio. I was really excited about the film, but it's been completely disorganized and doesn't feel right to me. The film is unpaid & I'm providing all my own transportation and evidently wardrobe. I asked the director to let me know by November 20th IF I need to supply any wardrobe, as I would be visiting home where there a good and cheap thrift stores, and he said he would. I never heard from him so I assumed I wouldn’t. Call sheets came out over a week later than he promised (it kept being "call sheets come out tomorrow! and then nothing. repeat cycle). I texted him Monday to just confirm that I don’t need to bring any wardrobe and he said “yes you need x for the 13th and x for the 14th”. I said I’m not on the call sheet for the 13th, and he said yes you are, and I sent him screenshots of the call sheet, which I was not on, and he just replied “Check your email.” and sent out an updated call sheet. No apology for the mess up or even to confirm that I'm still available (this is less than 48 hours in advance). So I now have less than 48 hours to find the wardrobe items required, and an extra day to pay for transportation out of the city. I would also have to be rearranging my schedule to make it the 13th. I don't know what to do, it really doesn't feel right to me at all, but like I said I'm new to this so I'm not sure what I should be expecting. However, the extra work I've done (both for big TV Networks & for student films) felt way more professional and respectful of my time than this. Is this normal treatment of actors? Should I say something and stand up for myself? Or just deal with it and never work with the guy again.

Brand new narrator here! But I'm a classically-trained actor from a pretty uppity conservatory program so I guess that's a huge leg-up in terms of artistry. Signed up on Monday for ACX, submitted two auditions yesterday and uploaded two samples, only to have an offer of $70/pfh for a 50k word horror thriller this morning! (Also another offer message from some random asking for 9 hours for 3 at $27/pfh with the promise of more which.... idk. I asked for credentials cause I read researching the author is key and the name was not immediately Google-able.) This is a big project for my first one, but it isn't due until February, so I'm hoping to book a few smaller ones during the process to build my resume/get better. I read it took a while to get a bite, so this seems pretty lucky to me. Just happy!! Thought I'd share.

Hi everyone, I’m currently a Senior in college and I’m getting a BFA in musical theater. Recently I’ve been looking into voice acting. The training I’m getting allows for us to get voice training as well as plenty of acting experience, but I’ve never done any “real” voice acting/voice over work. Do any of you have any tips and/or things that directors/creators look for (other than experience) when looking for voice actors? And do you have any tips on how someone could get into the community? So I saw a role on actors access for orgy participants for a feature film. Pays $900 and it’s just simulated sex acts and l might not even have to get naked. If I were to get the part, is this something that’s worth putting on my resume? I assume there’s no speaking lines although the description didn’t specify.
