I’m a voice actor, I’ve been doing it for about a year, but I still don’t have anywhere to record. I don’t have my own room, so I’ve been using the car. It’s quiet, private, and the audio actually comes out great. The issue is I live in Florida, and sitting in a car during summer heat is rough, since the temperature usually hits around 90–100°F. So now I’m stuck with nowhere I can practice or record. Any suggestions.

We've all had them:  The audition horror stories.  The auditions that were simply awful experiences due to things out of your control.

That's not the point of this post.  We're going to keep things light and laughable.

I want to hear your Audition Dum-Dum Stories.  The instances where, due to your own foolishness you totally biffed the audition in a laughably bad way.  The auditions where you look back at it and call yourself a dum-dum because you made a bad acting choice or did something that caused yourself to get out of the running for the role for any number of dumb actions you did.

Here is my entry for the Audition Dum-Dum Awards:

I was just starting out in pursuing acting seriously.  Scouring BackStage West.  Sending out headshots and resumes.  This was about thirty years ago...so I've obviously learned a few things to do -- and not do -- since then.

I was able to get an audition for a role for a feature film.  Not the lead role, but the lead's best friend.  One of those stereotypical happy-go-lucky, best friend types that were all the rage back in the 1990s that would have that third act turn to give the lead the good advice to follow, due to his own inability to take life seriously.  I was perfect for the role -- definitely not the leading man type, comedy was my forte, and I had a look that would definitely work for it -- I actually resembled a young Howard Stern, hair and all.  I memorized the scene (so I wouldn't be tied to the script) and was ready to crush it!

And here's where my bad choices started.

1.  I showed up to the audition in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts.  *facepalm*  Because nothing reads better as "fun-loving best friend" than Hawaiian shirt and shorts.
2.  I wore sunglasses during the audition  *face.  palm*, tossing them across the room at a key moment in the scene to demonstrate my dramatic turn.  *Face Palm.*
3.  I actually crossed the room to the reader *FacePalm!* and patted them on the shoulder at the end of the scene, while I said something to the effect of "There you go!", as the line dictated.  *FACEPALM!*

Yes...I can actually hear you saying something to the effect of, "You dum-dum!" as you're reading this (language definitely cleaned up).  Needless to say, I did not get the part (surprise, surprise!).  Thankfully, I was able to quickly figure out all my missteps, and ensured I never did them again, chalking it up to me being a major dum-dum.

There's my self-nomination.  Can anyone beat that?

We’re starting production on our second season and are looking to bring in a few new voices to round out the existing cast. We’ll be doing live recording sessions over Discord - the pay rate is $25/hour. The season will consist of 13 30-45 minute episodes. We’re currently looking for two voices. One female (RP British Accent) and one feminine-leaning/higher register for a gender-fluid character. Hi all - I've been booked for my first paid gig on ACX (yay!) Since joining in June. It's a sci-fi novel, exactly my kind of thing, mostly English and American accents. However I've just learned that an alien race appears later in the book and are written as having a Jamaican dialect. In sending the manuscript the writer has said -without prompting - "if you can't do that, don't worry about it", meaning we could potentially change the accent. However I don't want the writer to change their intentions because of me! I'm certain I could do a reasonable accent on a technical level, and if so I want to ensure that it's an earnest attempt at bringing the author's work to life. He seems totally unphased (or he wouldn't have hired me). Does anyone have advice on kind of guiding themselves through accents or characters that they've felt that concern for, in terms of worrying about caricaturing or coming across as insulting/inappropriate? This may be a non-issue - "it's in the script, so do it" - but as a relative newbie to audiobooks I would really welcome some experienced advice.

To all voice actors, narrators, and audiobook talents worldwide: I’m a Chinese voice over service provider based in China documenting a wildly contradictory ACX audio scam. This scammer opens with hyper-professional, industry-savvy casting talk that easily fools voice talents—especially me, as this was my very first project on ACX and I was unfamiliar with the platform’s official workflow, yet every money-grubbing trick he pulls afterward is clumsy, amateur and unintentionally hilarious. I share this full timeline to warn all global voice artists. # Full Scam Breakdown (Expert Industry Disguise vs Ridiculous Low-Quality Scam Tactics)   **Stage 1: Near-Perfect Industry Impersonation (High Deceptiveness at First Contact)** I first received a casting message on ACX from a contact named Kieran Layson, email: [kieranlayson@gmail.com](mailto:kieranlayson@gmail.com). The scammer fully mastered standard casting processes, requested voice demos and full recording equipment specifications, using authentic industry terms for voice recording, audio post-production, dry file delivery and bilingual localization with zero amateur loopholes, making the cooperation appear entirely legitimate. Key details of the fake receipt: Issuing Institution: POPLAR CREDIT UNION Stated Transfer Amount: £3,300.00 Transaction Date: June 28th, 2026 But there is an obvious fatal error: the recipient field was incorrectly filled with the scammer’s own name “Kieran s Layson” instead of my personal information, which directly proves the receipt was forged. This new persona reached out to me, claiming the project required an additional full English voice-over recording. When I messaged to ask about the missing payment, the scammer Kieran Layson, email: [kieranlayson@gmail.com](mailto:kieranlayson@gmail.com) claimed every transfer attempt had failed, and sent a second forged bank receipt labeled “Declined”. This second fake slip showed minor “progress” compared to his first clumsy draft — he finally fixed the payee field and correctly typed my real name this time! It’s almost funny how he tried to polish his forgery craft after his first embarrassing name typo fail. But even with this tiny correction, the whole document remained a fabricated fake bank record with no legitimate transaction behind it. This website is a confirmed phishing trap built to steal voice talents’ bank account numbers, verification codes and all private financial information. This email contained another ridiculous, obvious identity loophole: the sending mailbox was [kieranlayson@gmail.com](mailto:kieranlayson@gmail.com) (the first fake contact), but the signature at the bottom shamelessly signed off as “Leon Schneider”, two completely separate fake personas mixed in one single mail. It’s clear the scammer was too lazy to switch email accounts properly and blew his cover by accident. I told him I did not have the budget to pay for a VPN subscription, and asked if he could cover the VPN fees upfront so I could log into their banking portal to receive payment. The scammer immediately abandoned the phishing website login demand entirely and shifted to a brand-new extortion scheme: demanding an upfront currency conversion clearance fee of £150 (CNY 1359). It is utterly ridiculous that he claimed to represent a British production firm using UK credit union banking, yet demanded I pay international bank clearance fees via a domestic Chinese personal payment tool. There is absolutely no logical link between a UK corporate account and an individual’s WeChat QR code—this trick is so amateurish and poorly thought out that anyone can spot the scam straight away, laying bare just how low-quality his fraudulent ploys are. Many voice talents would trust him fully based solely on his industry knowledge. 2. Constant silly, low-effort mistakes in all financial scam steps • First fake bank slip had his own name written as payment recipient • Mixed two separate fake identities within a single email • Only fixed one obvious error on his second forged receipt, leaving the rest of the document fake • Abandoned his entire phishing website demand the moment I asked him to cover minor VPN costs • Pretended to represent a formal British financial institution yet only supplied a random personal Chinese WeChat QR code to collect international bank fees   # Key Red Flags (Professional Voice Talent Checklist) 1. Do not fully trust a client just because they use authentic voice-over industry casting language; polished professional opening lines can be memorized scripted bait for scams. 2. Watch for multiple rotating fake names, mailboxes and ACX accounts from the same contact—scammers use this tactic to mimic multiple company departments, yet often mix up their own personas by accident. 3. Carefully examine all bank transfer screenshots; obvious logical errors on payment slips are dead giveaways of cheap digital forgeries. 4. Any off-platform third-party banking/payroll links shared outside ACX official settlement channels are phishing traps designed to steal your bank credentials. 5. Legitimate global voice-over clients cover all cross-border conversion, transfer and clearance fees. Any request for talents to send upfront money is definite fraud. 6. Extreme logical mismatch between their claimed corporate identity and payment methods (UK production company asking for money via random personal Chinese WeChat QR codes) is an undeniable scam marker. **Global Voice Actor Safety Guidelines** 1．Never deliver complete finalized dry voice files or full translation work without a signed formal contract and agreed advance deposit, no matter how professional the client’s initial casting message reads. 2．Always cross-check all emails and payment screenshots for careless contradictory details, typos and identity mix-ups—these small silly mistakes expose scammers easily. 3．Reject all external third-party banking or payment portals sent by off-platform clients; only use ACX’s official built-in settlement tools. 4．Test suspicious clients by asking them to cover minor auxiliary costs required for payment access; genuine clients will not immediately pivot to new money demands when challenged. 5．Never accept client-provided bank transfer screenshots as proof of completed payment; only confirm incoming funds via your official bank transaction history records. **Final Reminder** This scam group targets global voice actors on ACX specifically. Their deep understanding of voice-over production and casting makes their professional disguise extremely deceptive. More than a year since my [first ever](https://www.reddit.com/r/VoiceActing/comments/1ki8a0z/how_is_working_with_audio_engineers_like/) post in this sub and I've learned so much to heart that I took all the advice I've gotten to the booth, especially in figuring out my approach as an AE and learning to communicate with the director and the voice actor, such suggesting possible dialogue changes to match the flaps. It's not totally perfect but many of the VA's I've been working with on this production have noted that I've improved so much since this project began (it's a foreign soap opera that we've dubbed in our language and it's currently airing now here in the PH). Now that we've wrapped, it's just so weird thinking how green I was when this was handed to me while I was still inexperienced as a tech in September. But towards the end, I now managed to get a hang of it now. I've also kinda dabbled in providing additional voices, from doing random soundbites to whistles and whatever reax is needed so it's interesting when I finally get to hear myself once those episodes I'm in air (I've done voiceover before for [a defunct TV channel](https://x.com/VickyRuffoWeb/status/1746318524186780149) so I'm familiar with the ropes but voiceover announcing is different from dubbing for sure). It's is an interesting time now being a part of this industry because of the challenges that could upend our jobs and livelihood. I can only hope for the best because I love where I am right now. :) Thanks.

EDIT: so it appears Vocaster app may be the culprit in this. I saw that the mixer volume was set to 100 and as I lower it the buzzing kind of faded away, so I think it was amplifying it so now I’m trying to find that sweet spot between the physical knob and the apps volume. Hello, voice actors! I’ve recently run into somethis problem where sometimes I hear buzz in my playback after recording. I’m not sure if I’m going crazy in thinking it comes and goes but it’s beeen there’re lately. It’s not super loud or anything but it lives under my voice and I thought I’d reach out to you lovely people to gather possible fixes. ***TL;DR I have no idea how to network my way through the entertainment industry and I could really use some help.*** I've been booking small professional jobs for over three years now, and I have current representation through a small agency. I make and post my own original content online which is relevant to the work I want to do professionally; my videos consistently get thousands of views per post, and occasionally hit numbers around 300,000-600,000 views on some of my videos. I learn and study everything I can about my craft, and have been cast to work with over 20 different teams across audiobooks, video games, and animation. I've also had my demo professionally appraised and been told that it is definitely good enough to be competitive in professional arenas. *But...* My current representation is seriously underwhelming, and has told me to only expect 3-4 auditions PER YEAR from them. I've been trying to reach out to better agencies but they won't respond to my emails and I can't get past the receptionist when I call. Everywhere I search for help just tells me that I need connections and referrals to break through to where I want to be, but unfortunately connections don't just fall out of the sky and I haven't made any natural connections in the work that I've done that can help me with this. I want to work in anime and video games more than anything, and I really think I'm ready to move up to bigger and better places than where I am. I think I just need to make some industry friends, but I have no idea where to even begin there. I've tried reaching out to working voice actors who have strong online presences, and if they even respond they're very vague and don't want to talk about who specifically gave them the referral that sling-shotted their career into the big leagues. I've looked into paying for coaching sessions to possibly get an hour of one-on-one time with someone who has industry connections, but anyone who would be worth talking to costs hundreds of dollars per hour and I don't want to spend that kind of money on something that might not even help. And same with online classes and workshops, I don't want to spend my small voice acting budget on a ticket into a zoom meeting where twelve other people are competing for a coaches' attention for a few hours, and then come out the other side having functionally accomplished nothing. Does anyone know how I can get some face time with someone who has connections? I'm in the NYC area., googling in-person networking events doesn't get any results, and like I said my attempts to call or email agencies don't even get me past the front desk. Any help would be amazingly appreciated, especially if any agents, coaches, or working voice actors would like to weigh in on it.
